Designer Insights with Sayre Ziskin

Sayre Ziskin is the principal interior designer of SVZ Interior Design, offering a full design service to both residential and commercial clients in Los Angeles. Sayre has a strong background in fine arts and commercial advertising, where she refined her design abilities before establishing her own firm in 2010. She studied literature in London, received a BA from UC Santa Barbara and honed her interior design skills at UCLA. So we are proud to bring you the Designer Insights of Sayre Ziskin.

1) In your own words describe your unique style and creative aesthetic?

In a few words my style is clean, warm, textural and transitional.

2) When starting a new project, what is your creative process? 

Typically I start with an inspiration image whether it is a simple detail or a room that I’m drawn to. From that image I expand. I will always go back to that image as my touchstone, which keeps the whole space consistent.

3) Out of the creative people you have worked with, who is it that you respect and admire the most?

I admire people who make things with their hands. Craftsman, artists, makers. I have a buddy, Uri who owns Neptune Glassworks, and he is a genius with glass. I’m currently working with him on two bespoke pieces that I’m excited to see.

4) When looking for inspiration is there a particular thing you do to get inspired?

I’m often inspired by color and texture. In my own home I love lots of colourful accents and patterns. Looking at textiles always makes me get into the creative spirit and I often go out and just take my time while browsing the many different patterns, textures and colours out there.

5) What has brought you to this point in your career? And what is your advice for people looking to follow in your footsteps? 

I’ve always been a structured, hardworking person with a strong sense of order and discipline. I am also a creative person with an eye for aesthetics, art, color and composition. On top of that, I do love working with people and enjoy the challenge, reward and general psychology of working with different types of people. You must be a mix of creative, business-minded and a people person in order to run your own interior design business. That is the key. If you have that base, then use those strengths to build your client base and grow your business.
